Rowan Elementary School

Rowan Elementary School established a partnership in 2022 with the Hattiesburg Junior Auxiliary to address the basic needs of students through the Backpack Blessings program, which provides food packages each Friday to ensure students have nourishment over the weekend. This initiative recognizes that for many students, school is their primary source of daily meals, and it seeks to close the gap when they are away from school. Fully funded through donations, the program serves over 90 students weekly during the school year and extends support during the summer through partnerships with local organizations. Beyond meeting physical needs, the program focuses on building relationships with students and families while promoting care, compassion, and overall well-being. Located in a low socioeconomic area of Hattiesburg, Rowan Elementary serves 400 predominantly African American students, all of whom receive free meals, making this partnership essential to supporting both their academic success and daily living needs.
